Google Gemini Is Coming to Millions of GM Vehicles
General Motors wants its cars to talk back with more than canned commands.
GM is expected to add Google Gemini support to millions of Cadillac, Buick, Chevrolet, and GMC vehicles from model year 2022 and newer, though the company has not announced an exact rollout date. The update, announced by the company on Tuesday, could expand voice-controlled features inside GM vehicles, including message summaries, playlist creation, navigation help, and trip planning.
The bigger question is whether Gemini becomes a genuinely useful driving assistant or just another AI feature parked inside the dashboard.
Embracing next-gen technology
The team at GM is no stranger to integrating next-gen technology into modern motor vehicles. OnStar, which was first made available in a select few 1997 Cadillac models, has been a standard feature on new GM cars for decades. But the addition of Google Gemini is expected to add even more tech-driven functionality.
Tim Twerdahl, the global VP of Product Management with General Motors, explained in a press release how Google Gemini works with GM’s OnStar platform:
“Gemini delivers AI assistance to millions of drivers across every segment and price point for a wide range of everyday needs. That kind of scale is only possible because of the connected vehicle foundation GM has built through OnStar over the past 30 years. Later this year, GM will deliver a more deeply integrated AI experience shaped by OnStar intelligence.”
Test-driving the new features
Drivers who receive the update will enjoy a plethora of new features, all of which can be accessed and controlled via voice. Some of the upcoming features include:
- Summarizing incoming text messages and sending replies: Not only can Gemini read any messages you receive while driving, but it can help you draft thoughtful replies, too. It even supports emojis.
- Creating the perfect playlist: There’s no need to spend time creating a mix CD or loading your phone with your favorite songs. Instead, you can literally ask Google to create the perfect playlist based on your specific preferences.
- Getting directions and planning your itinerary: Harness the power of Google Maps and Google Earth to quickly find directions to nearly any location imaginable, making it easy to complement your trip with local restaurants and attractions.
- Learning new things and brainstorming ideas: You can even use Gemini to help learn new subjects, brainstorm ideas for your next project, or organize your thoughts.
All of these features have already been teased by GM as available at the initial launch of Google Gemini. Even more features are expected to be made available with future updates.
Racing toward AI
The recent partnership between Google and GM has added an all-new level of competition to the AI race. Although they still face stiff competition from Tesla, Nvidia, and others, the integration of Google Gemini into GM vehicles is a monumental step toward the finish line for both brands.
