Tottenham receive immediate blow in pursuit of James Tavernier after journalist prediction
Journalist Pete O’Rourke has revealed where James Tavernier is likely to end up this summer amid reports that Tottenham want to bring the right-back to England.
The 34-year-old has been at Rangers for over a decade and will go down as one of the club’s biggest modern-day legends, but his time with the Glasgow club will end this summer when his contract runs out.
A couple of days ago, it emerged that Tottenham are considering signing Tavernier on a free transfer if they fail to stay in the Premier League.
It was explained that the Lilywhites believe that the Englishman’s experience and leadership will come in handy in their quest to bounce straight back up if the worst happens over the coming weeks.
Blow for Tottenham as James Tavernier deemed unlikely to return to England
Pete O’Rourke has now revealed that the right-back has not yet made a final decision on his next destination and is not short of suitors.
However, he suggested that Tavernier is unlikely to return to England at this stage of his career and may prefer a move to the Saudi Pro League.
When asked about the speculation linking the Rangers captain with a move to Spurs, the journalist told Football Insider: “There’s nothing set in stone with Tavernier. There’s been interest from Saudi Arabia. Obviously, he’s announced that he’s leaving Rangers after a really successful 11-year spell at the club.
“I don’t envisage that he will make the move down to England in the Premier League, I think probably at this stage of his career. Tavernier himself would prefer a new challenge, so maybe a move to Europe or the Saudi Pro League, where there has been interest in the past.
“He’ll have options from a number of clubs in different countries, and maybe big contracts as well, so a return to England now is unlikely.”
Spurs are working on several free transfers
Tavernier is not the only free agent on the Lilywhites’ radar, with reports indicating that Tottenham have also held advanced talks with Marcos Senesi, whose deal at Bournemouth runs out this summer.
Additionally, some sources have suggested that Andy Robertson has already agreed to join Spurs on a free transfer if the club avoid relegation.
Some experts have suggested that Tottenham have a major cash flow problem at the moment, and the club’s focus on free agents suggests that there may be merit to that claim.
