Iran Negotiations in Limbo; Trump Calls on Tehran to Act Wisely
Donald Trump has urged Iran to act “wisely” and move quickly toward an agreement, as negotiations between Tehran and Washington remain uncertain and stalled.
Speaking on Wednesday, Trump said Iran was struggling to manage its affairs and criticized its approach to diplomacy, adding that “they do not know how to sign a non-nuclear deal,” while warning that time for action is limited.
His remarks come amid growing international debate over the direction of talks, with Friedrich Merz sharply criticizing the United States, arguing that Washington had been “humiliated” in the confrontation with Iran and had allowed Tehran to gain the upper hand diplomatically.
Trump rejected those comments, saying the German leader lacked understanding of the Iran file and defending his administration’s strategy, while reiterating concerns about the global risks of Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
According to reports, Iran has presented a three-phase proposal aimed at easing tensions, including the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz followed by gradual negotiations on its nuclear program.
However, U.S. officials have signaled dissatisfaction with the proposal, with reports indicating Trump is not convinced by delaying nuclear discussions, insisting that such issues must be addressed from the outset.
The White House has confirmed that Trump’s national security team is reviewing Iran’s proposal, particularly its implications for maritime security and global energy flows through the Gulf region.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, and any disruption or uncertainty in the waterway has immediate economic consequences for international markets and major economies.
Diplomatic efforts have intensified in recent weeks, with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi visiting Pakistan, Oman, and Russia to build support for renewed negotiations and explore pathways to de-escalation.
Despite these efforts, recent rounds of talks have failed to produce a breakthrough, and divisions among Western allies—highlighted by Merz’s criticism—underscore the fragile and increasingly complex diplomatic landscape surrounding the Iran issue.
