Gunmen Attack Police Patrol in Southeast Iran, One Officer Killed
Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a police patrol in Zahedan, killing one officer and wounding three others, according to authorities in Sistan and Baluchestan.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the provincial police information center said the injured officers were receiving medical treatment, while confirming that the slain officer was identified as Mohammadreza Nezamdoost.
Officials said an investigation has been launched to identify and apprehend those responsible, adding that efforts are ongoing to ensure the safety of residents in the area.
Sistan and Baluchestan, a largely underdeveloped region bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan, has long been affected by security challenges, including armed attacks, smuggling, and insurgent activity.
Iranian authorities have frequently reported clashes with militant groups operating in the region, some of which are accused of targeting security forces and infrastructure.
In recent years, several attacks on police and border forces have highlighted persistent instability in the province, prompting increased security deployments and operations.
At the same time, regional tensions and broader unrest in parts of the Middle East have added pressure on Iran’s internal security environment, raising concerns about cross-border threats and militant infiltration.
Despite these challenges, officials say investigations into the latest attack are ongoing, though no group has yet claimed responsibility and further details remain limited.
