A number of initiatives have ensured that it has broken down barriers for members of the LGBTQ+ community, including the Racing With Pride programme, which was launched in September 2020.

Racing With Pride is one of a number of initiatives in horse racing to spread LGBTQ+ visibility within the sport.

Importantly, this module is now compulsory for jockeys and trainers when completing their licensing courses at the British Racing School and National Horseracing College. 

Key steps have also been taken in other nations, with the Pride Project being an excellent programme in Australia. Led by Danny Lley and Archie Alexander, the first-of-its-kind syndicate is owned entirely by individuals in the LGBTQ+ community. Runners will wear pride flag silks on track, spreading the important message of awareness in some of the biggest races in Australia. 

Key Figures in Spreading Visibility

Of course, the most important way to spread visibility within sport is by figures directly involved in sport speaking out. There has been no shortage of trail blazers in this regard, with a number of typically conservative sports being forced to open their doors. 

One of the most important was Jake Daniels, who became the first openly gay footballer based in the United Kingdom in 2022. His announcement was welcomed by key figures, including Prince William and England captain Harry Kane.

One of Britain’s most famous Olympians also helped spread visibility. Tom Daley came out in 2013 and was a pioneering figure behind the success of the 2012 Summer Olympics. Events including Daley were among the most-watched during the Games, and his popularity also led to a reality show called ‘Splash!’ being released. 

American sport has also had pioneering figures in spreading visibility, with Jason Collins becoming the first U.S. athlete to play in any of the four major North American pro sports leagues after coming out in 2013. His decision to tell his truth saw him named among the ‘100 Most Influential People in the World’. The Californian native remains one of the most important voices in the community, with stars such as Kobe Bryant, Barack Obama, and Bill Clinton all offering their support of the NBA star. 

Sport Specific Visibility

Unfortunately, not every sport has a pioneering star that they can use as an inspiration in this modern day, but that hasn’t stopped governing bodies from taking their own steps to improve visibility. 

This has been reflected in motorsports with organizations such as Racing Pride working toward improving inclusion. The success of the programme has been shaped by figures such as Aston Martin’s Matthew-Harriet Randall sharing their experiences. 

Wrestling is traditionally regarded as one of the most masculine environments, but inclusive groups such as Fist Club have played a profound impact on offering a voice for members of the LGBTQ+ community, allowing them to compete in the sport regardless of their personal life. 

Another sport that has typically been conservative is golf, but steps have been made in the right direction to break down long standing barriers. One of the most successful initiatives has come in the form of LGBT Golf, who works tirelessly to ensure that the sport is more welcoming. A key figure in the movement is PGA professional player Gary Shaw.
