Calling the game, building the trust: Catcher Oliver Stewart on working with Jack Besgrove
At the Eduardo Porras Stadium during the WBSC U-23 Men's Softball World Cup 2026, Australia’s success is being shaped not only by talent, but by trust, particularly between catcher Oliver Stewart and star pitcher Jack Besgrove. Their partnership highlights the importance of connection, preparation, and shared intensity at the highest level of the game.
For Stewart, the experience of catching Besgrove is as demanding as it is rewarding. “It’s really good working with Jack because he’s a very good pitcher, obviously everyone knows that,” he says. “So working with him you know exactly what you’re going to get… it’s a privilege to work with Jack at this level.”
That consistency is matched by a shared work ethic. “He works just as hard as I do… and it’s good because he pushes me as well,” Stewart adds, pointing to the competitiveness that elevates both players.
Off the field, the relationship is relaxed. On it, everything changes. “Me and Jack, we get along really well on and off the diamond. We have a joke, have a laugh. But then when it comes game time we switch on,” Stewart explains. “We’re able to lock in together and work together really well. A lot of trust in each other.”
That trust is essential when it comes to calling pitches, probably one of the catcher’s most critical responsibilities. Stewart takes ownership of that role, blending preparation with instinct. “Yes, I call the game… we do scouting and we look at reviews and stuff. So it is up to me to know what to call and when to call it,” he says. “And Jack has a lot of faith that I know what each batter can and can’t hit.”
Besgrove’s effectiveness in the circle starts with mindset. “His mindset is a lot different… he’s a very, very hard worker,” Stewart notes. “His ability to know what he wants to throw and throw it with a purpose is just a different level.”
From behind the plate, Stewart has a clear view of what makes his teammate so dangerous. “Definitely his rise ball and his change up… but the rise ball would be his best pitch,” he says, identifying the weapons that keep hitters off balance.
Preparation routines further reinforce their connection. “Once we find out if we’re pitching together we’ll start warming up together, get him loosening,” Stewart explains. “When he feels good, we go sit down, have a break and then go after game time.”
Working alongside Besgrove has also left a personal impact. “The amount of work and dedication it takes to be at his level… he just lifts my level of intensity up every time we play,” Stewart reflects.
With Australia now heading into the Super Round, confidence within the squad is growing. “I think we’re in a great position so far… I’m liking where the boys are at and how we’re clicking as a team,” Stewart says.
As the tournament intensifies, the Stewart–Besgrove partnership stands as a cornerstone of Australia’s campaign—built on trust, preparation, and a shared commitment to excellence.
