Phalombe DC urges parents in Mozambique to return for Polio vaccination

Phalombe, April 28, MANA: Phalombe District Commissioner Yobu Makina has appealed to Malawian parents and guardians who temporarily relocated to Mozambique for piece work to return home and ensure their children under 10 years old have receive the vaccine.

In an interview on Tuesday, Makina said the country has rolled out the second phase of the polio vaccination campaign from April 27 to April 30, 2026.

He described the exercise as critical in protecting children against polio, a disease that can cause lifelong paralysis and emphasised the need for full public participation to safeguard public health.

“To parents, guardians and teachers, let us assist our children to be vaccinated against polio to prevent children from paralysis,” Makina said.

Meanwhile, Phalombe District Health Office spokesperson Happy Chawinga said the district is targeting 164,301 children under 10 during the second phase.

He added that the district achieved 101 percent coverage during the first phase of the campaign.

The Ministry of Health is conducting the nationwide campaign in response to polio cases detected in the region, with health workers moving door to door and setting up fixed posts in health facilities and communities.
