Train Collision Near Jakarta Kills 5, Injures 79
At least five people killed and dozens injured after two trains collide near Jakarta, raising concerns over rail safety in Indonesia.
At least five people were killed and 79 others injured after two trains collided near Jakarta, authorities said, in one of the most serious rail accidents in the area in recent years.
The incident occurred late Monday evening in the outskirts of the city, where emergency teams were quickly deployed, but rescue efforts were complicated by severe damage and limited space inside the train carriages.
Officials said some passengers remain trapped in the wreckage, and rescue teams are continuing operations to reach those still inside, as the scale of destruction has made the process slow and difficult.
The head of Indonesia Search and Rescue Agency said the complexity of the crash site has delayed operations, with teams working carefully to extract survivors without causing further harm.
Reports indicate the collision involved a commuter train on the Jakarta–Cikarang route and the intercity “Argo Bromo Anggrek,” which runs between Jakarta and Surabaya, one of the country’s busiest rail corridors.
Indonesia has experienced several major rail accidents in the past, raising long-standing concerns about safety standards and infrastructure reliability.
In 2010, a train collision in Central Java killed dozens of people, while another accident in 2015 involving a train and a passenger bus in West Java resulted in 18 deaths.
Authorities have pledged to improve rail safety and infrastructure in recent years, but repeated incidents continue to highlight weaknesses in signaling systems and operational coordination.
Investigations into the latest crash are expected to examine possible technical failures or human error, as officials work to determine the cause and prevent future accidents.
