Pakistan Strikes in Kunar Kill 7, Injure 75 as Death Toll Rises
Pakistani strikes in Kunar province kill seven and injure 75, including women and children, as the death toll rises amid escalating border tensions.
At least seven people have been killed and 75 others injured after Pakistani strikes hit parts of Kunar, including the provincial capital Asadabad and Sarkano district, with the death toll rising as more victims are identified.
Officials at a government hospital in Asadabad confirmed that dozens of wounded, including women and children, were brought in for treatment, while emergency teams continue to respond to the situation.
Local sources said the strikes targeted multiple locations, including residential areas and Sayed Jamaluddin Afghan University, where several mortar rounds hit the campus, causing damage and panic among students and staff.
Witnesses reported heavy explosions and thick black smoke rising from impacted region, with visible destruction to buildings, particularly within the university compound and nearby neighborhoods.
Authorities said at least 30 students and staff were injured in the strike on the university, as ambulances transported casualties to hospitals and some victims remained in critical condition.
Residents said the intensity of the attacks forced several families to flee their homes, while reports also suggested the possible use of drones and aircraft in addition to rocket fire.
The strikes come despite recent efforts by tribal elders on both sides of the Durand Line to reduce tensions and reach a local ceasefire agreement.
Border tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan have intensified in recent months, with repeated exchanges of fire and growing concerns over civilian casualties.
Both sides have accused each other of contributing to instability, while diplomatic and local mediation efforts have so far failed to prevent further escalation.
Recent clashes have also been reported in Kandahar and South Waziristan, indicating that tensions are spreading across multiple border regions.
The United Nations has warned that ongoing violence is worsening the humanitarian situation, with civilians continuing to bear the brunt of cross-border conflict.
