UN Rights Expert Urges Accountability Over Pakistan Strikes in Kunar
UN expert calls for investigation into Pakistan’s strikes in Kunar as civilian sites, including a university, are reportedly hit.
Richard Bennett has called for accountability following reported Pakistani strikes on civilian areas in Kunar Province, stressing that civilians must be protected under international law.
In a statement, Bennett urged swift, independent, and comprehensive investigations into both recent and past incidents, warning that impunity risks further escalation and harm to civilians.
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan also expressed concern, saying educational institutions must never be targeted after reports that shelling hit Syed Jamaluddin Afghan University and other civilian locations.
United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan said strikes in Asadabad killed and injured dozens of civilians, stressing that civilian sites, including universities, must always be protected.
Local authorities reported at least three dead and 45 injured in the strikes, which reportedly affected districts including Dangam and Shultan, as well as student dormitories in Asadabad.
There has been no immediate official response from Pakistan regarding the allegations. Border tensions between Pakistan and Pakistan have intensified in recent months, with repeated cross-border shelling and clashes raising concerns about civilian safety in frontier regions.
International law requires all parties to armed conflict to distinguish between civilian and military targets, with attacks on schools and civilian infrastructure considered serious violations.
Human rights groups and UN officials have increasingly warned that continued escalation along the Pakistanand Afghanistan border could worsen humanitarian conditions and displacement in already vulnerable communities.
