100% tackles, 100% dribbles: 74-touch Man Utd star is undroppable under Carrick, deserves new contract
Manchester United picked up a 2-1 victory over Brentford in the Premier League yesterday.
The Red Devils suffered a disappointing 2-1 loss to Leeds United in their previous game at Old Trafford and made amends with a win over the Bees.
Casemiro opened the scoring with a trademark header before Benjamin Sesko doubled the club’s advantage prior to the half-time interval.
United went more defensive in the second half with Noussair Mazraoui replacing Amad Diallo, but they managed to hold out for a hard-fought win.
Bruno Fernandes earned plaudits after his 19th assist of the league season. He is just one shy of the competition record held by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry.
His midfield partner, Kobbie Mainoo, had an equally good outing in the heart of the midfield.
The club graduate won 100 percent of his tackles (4/4) and dribbles (3/3) on the night.
Mainoo, who had 74 touches in the game, also won eight duels with five successful recoveries.
The 21-year-old was completely out of the picture for a starting position under former manager Ruben Amorim, but his fortunes have completely changed.
Under interim boss Michael Carrick, Mainoo has been ever-present in midfield, except for the Leeds United match, when he was sidelined with an injury.
Mainoo’s absence was felt against the Whites as Manuel Ugarte struggled to provide solidity in the centre of the park due to his poor positional awareness.
It can now be said that Mainoo is undroppable under Carrick’s tutelage and looks poised for a huge future with the Mancunian giants, according to reports.
The midfielder deserves a new long-term contract for his turnaround, and it has been claimed that the hierarchy are on the cusp of confirming his renewal.
Mainoo has verbally agreed on a five-year deal, and an announcement could be made pretty soon.
United host arch-rivals Liverpool in their next league game on May 3.
They could qualify for the Champions League before then if Brighton & Hove Albion and Bournemouth fail to win their respective matches this weekend.
