Cyprus’ annual prickly exhibition heading to capital
Plants, cacti and all kinds of big, small, colourful and green succulents are coming to fill a Nicosia park this May. The 17th Annual Exhibition of the Cyprus Cactus and other Succulents Society returns to Acropolis Park on May 10, inviting plant enthusiasts and nature lovers of all ages to explore this unique collection.
Within the park’s Caves Exhibition Hall, visitors will be able to admire rare and collectable cacti and succulents, carefully cultivated by the society’s members. Over the years, members have gained significant experience, something clearly reflected in the exceptional quality of the plants that will be on display.
Alongside the exhibition, the traditional Plant Competition will also take place. This year’s judge is Dr Andreas Laras, member of the Hellenic Society of Cacti and Other Succulents, an experienced collector and internationally recognised researcher of Mexican cacti.
In the outdoor area of the event, a marketplace will be set up featuring cacti and succulents from nurseries and growers across Cyprus, as well as collectable plants, handmade pots and other related products.
Throughout the day, the society will distribute free copies of the eight-page booklet The Smart Garden, produced in collaboration with the Environment Commissioner. The booklet offers practical guidance on how succulents can be used effectively in Cypriot gardens.
From 10am to 7pm, the event will remind visitors that succulents are an excellent choice for Cyprus as they are highly resilient, require minimal water and care, are easy to pair with other drought-tolerant Mediterranean plants and can withstand harsh winters as well as coastal conditions.
