I designed my own men's overcoat at Indochino — here's what it looks like, how it fits, and why I recommend custom clothing to everyone

It's a chilly fall morning, and you're getting dressed for another day at the office. You pick out the perfect wool suit and pair it with your best dress shirt, tie, and dress shoes. You're ready to go; all you need to do is put on your jacket. You reach in the closet and grab a hooded puffer coat or a technical ski jacket to block out the chill. And just like that, your impeccably stylish formal outfit is ruined by bright colors and performance materials.

Unfortunately, this is the fate of many men who dress formally, whether on a regular basis for their careers or on occasion. That's why every man should own a piece of formal outerwear to pair with his suits and ties — and Indochino is now one of the best places to get one that's perfect for you.

How to make your own custom Indochino coat

There are two ways to go about getting fitted for Indochino. You can follow an in-depth, step-by-step video guide to accurately measure yourself at home, or you can visit one of Indochino's many showrooms in the United States and Canada to get measured by a professional.

Once you have your measurements, you can complete the ordering process online. I decided to go to Indochino's Financial District, Manhattan, location to get measured since it's a short walk away from the Insider Inc. office. 

In addition to being made specifically for your body, the customization process includes options like choosing the lapel style, lining color, buttons, and adding a monogram. By creating a custom coat, you'll stand out from everyone else wearing off-the-rack garments. After I got measured, I ordered a double-breasted Heartford Quilted Camel Overcoat with a burgundy interior lining and my name monogrammed onto the collar.

How it fits and what it's like to wear

My coat took about two weeks to arrive, which is expected for a custom garment. My first impression was that it's a well-made, high-quality coat. The 90% wool/10% cashmere blend is super soft to the touch, and it has a substantial weight to it. It's far from a cheap fast-fashion overcoat that will only last you one or two seasons.

When I first tried the coat on, it fit me perfectly. Indochino does offer free alterations if you need to make some adjustments, but I had no issues or complaints. It's worth noting that overcoats are designed to be worn over a suit jacket, so if you try it on over just a T-shirt, you'll have the impression that it's too big.

In my opinion, the double-breasted design I chose lends itself more to formal than casual, so I wore it with a T.M. Lewin Infinity Suit, a Rhone Commuter Dress Shirt, a Jos. A. Bank tie, and Bonobos Percy Wingtip Shoes. I got several compliments on my way to work and while shooting this photo set on Wall Street — and there are plenty of guys in Downtown Manhattan going for the same exact look.

If you're not going to wear your overcoat with formal attire, I'd recommend pairing it with a chunky cable-knit sweater or a cashmere turtleneck for a more casual look. I found the coat to be exceptionally warm for this time of year, and I'll likely wear it into the winter. However, I'll definitely pick a warmer coat in my closet when temperatures dip well below freezing. 

The bottom line

Priced from $295 to $445, with mac coats being the least expensive and overcoats being the most expensive, Indochino's outerwear collection has pieces for a range of styles and budgets. I do believe that overcoats will be the most popular variation.

If you've ever worn any other custom clothing from Indochino, you can expect the same level of quality in the materials and production and the same level of accuracy in the fitting. If you're a first-time customer, you should shop with confidence knowing that you'll get a quality garment in return. I discovered Indochino when the brand released chinos last year, and I've been a big fan ever since. 

As we lean further into fall and soon winter, you don't want to be that guy wearing the wrong jacket with your suit or going without one for the sake of looking good. Indochino custom outerwear is the way to go.
