Forget Brentford: Michael Carrick can force INEOS to make him Man United manager by beating Liverpool

Manchester United will face Brentford at Old Trafford in the Premier League later today.

The Red Devils currently sit third in the table, with Liverpool and Aston Villa breathing down their necks.

With just five games remaining, United look increasingly likely to secure their return to the UEFA Champions League next season.

Michael Carrick has done a remarkable job since taking charge in January.

The 44-year-old has guided United to eight wins, two draws and just two defeats during his interim spell.

INEOS may now seriously consider appointing Carrick permanently, though doubts may still linger over his credentials after the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer era.

Thomas Tuchel was heavily linked with the vacant Man United job but he signed a contract extension with England. Carlo Ancelotti is also expected to extend his stay Brazil.

Many would argue that securing a top-five finish should be enough to earn Carrick the full-time role.

However, Carrick could leave INEOS with no choice but to appoint him if he can lead United to victory over Liverpool on May 3.

The Merseyside giants will arrive at the Theatre of Dreams desperate for revenge after their humiliation at Anfield earlier this season.

Carrick has already shown an impressive ability to prepare his side for the biggest occasions.

United have beaten Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Aston Villa during his 12-game reign.

If he can mastermind a victory over Liverpool, there may be no credible argument against handing him the job permanently.

INEOS may have no reason to look elsewhere if United emerge victorious next Sunday.
