Colombia Bomb Attack Death Toll Rises to 19 Ahead of Election
The death toll from a bomb attack on a highway in southwestern Colombia has risen to 19, with dozens more injured, authorities said.
The explosion took place in Cauca on Saturday after attackers blocked the road with a bus and a vehicle before detonating explosives, destroying and overturning several vehicles.
Initial reports had put the toll at 14, but officials later confirmed the higher figure, underscoring the severity of the blast.
President Gustavo Petro blamed the attack on a faction linked to outlaw leader Ivan Mordisco, one of the country’s most wanted figures.
Cauca is a long-standing conflict zone where armed groups, including dissident guerrilla factions and criminal networks, operate and compete for control of drug trafficking routes.
Violence has persisted despite past peace agreements, with recurring attacks on civilians and security forces in remote region.
The attack comes weeks before Colombia’s presidential election, where security has become a key issue for voters and candidates.
A recent surge in violence has raised concerns about stability and the government’s ability to contain armed groups ahead of the vote.
