Nedra Talley, Last Surviving Member of The Ronettes, Dies at 80

Nedra Talley, the last surviving core member of The Ronettes, has died. She was 80 years old.

Nedra's daughter, Nedra K. Ross, announced her mother's passing in a statement on Facebook, writing, "At approximately 8:30 this morning our mother Nedra Talley Ross went home to be with the Lord. She was safe in her own bed at home with her family close, knowing she was loved. Thank you Lord."

Nedra, later known as Nedra Talley-Ross, was in the hit-making '60s girl group with her cousins, Veronica Bennett (later known as Ronnie Spector upon her marriage to producer Phil Spector) and Ronnie's older sister, Estelle Bennett. The group was active from 1959-1967, and later for a brief reunion between 1973-1974.

Although the Ronettes only released one studio album, Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes (1964), the girl group had a number of hits, including "Be My Baby", "Baby, I Love You", and the holiday-inspired renditions of "Sleigh Ride" and "Frosty the Snowman."

Through their relationship with Phil Spector, the group's influence spanned far wider than their longevity as an active girl group, helping to develop the "Wall of Sound" technique, now a milestone in the development of modern music. The dense layering of vocals and instruments, as guided by Spector and "the Wrecking Crew" session musicians, helped create a new dimension in the sound of popular music.

The Ronettes also famously opened for The Beatles on their final world tour in 1966, ushering in an era when rock and roll permanently altered the landscape of music and culture, and the band escaped the stereotypes of girl groups, as well as African-American musical groups, of the time, thanks to their edgier look and sound. The crossing of gender and racial conventions didn't stop there, with Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, The Ramones, and Amy Winehouse citing the Ronettes as major influences on their work — perhaps best represented by Amy's Ronettes-inspired signature beehive hairdo.

Estelle Bennett and Ronnie Spector died in 2009 and 2022, respectively. Following the disbanding of the Ronettes, Nedra continued to work as a solo artist, mainly in the Christian music genre.
