FDH Bank suspends Malawi football sponsorship after league chaos
FDH Bank has suspended all its sports sponsorships in Malawi following a governance dispute that led to the abandonment of the FDH Bank Premiership season opener in Blantyre.
The bank said the decision comes after an impasse between the Super League of Malawi (SULOM) and the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), which it says has damaged the credibility of its partnerships and affected its brand image.
The suspension affects major funding packages, including the top-flight FDH Bank Premiership, netball competitions, national team support, and school sports programmes, worth an estimated 7.5 billion kwacha in total.
The announcement follows chaotic scenes at Kamuzu Stadium on Saturday, where the match between Mighty Wanderers and Karonga United failed to kick off despite thousands of fans in attendance.
The game was abandoned after referees did not report for duty. Reports suggest a breakdown in communication between football authorities over venue readiness contributed to the disruption.
Both teams had warmed up and officials were present, including government and football stakeholders, before the fixture was eventually called off, triggering anger among supporters.
FDH Bank, one of Malawi’s biggest private sports sponsors, said it would review its involvement in sport before deciding on future engagement.
The Super League of Malawi has apologised for the incident, describing it as unfortunate and assuring stakeholders that the league season will continue as planned.
However, the funding suspension now casts uncertainty over Malawi’s domestic football structure, with clubs heavily dependent on sponsorship support.
Public reaction has been strong, with many fans taking to social media to criticise football leadership and demand accountability over the failed season opener.
