Aston Villa boss slams the team ‘not clinical’ in Fulham defeat

The Aston Villa manager is upset about how his team were not clinical in their finishing, leading to the Fulham defeat yesterday.

Unai Emery apparently could not hide his disappointment at their defeat in Craven Cottage. Villa wasted a number of chances, which should have given them three points instead of nothing. He underlined those in the press conference after the game, as reported by BirminghamMail.

“Those four chances in 90 minutes were something to be clinical in to score a goal, but we were not clinical. We have to continue practising to score a goal with the chances we had.”

Aston Villa’s form in the away fixtures has been rather inconsistent this season, especially in the Premier League. They have been beaten six times and only managed to pick up one point five times. Yet, the Lions also managed to come home with three points in six games too.

Emery then added how wasteful they were in Fulham and also in Nottingham two weeks ago.
“We had two chances, one for Morgan and one for Watkins. We also had corners. We couldn’t dominate like we wanted because they were getting man-to-man, like lots of matches we are playing.

“We conceded one goal and we were losing, but the second half changed as we dominated more and we were more in the attacking third. We created two very good chances to score – Watkins and Tammy Abraham.

“In Nottingham, we had the same chances for Watkins; it was the same. Being responsible myself to practise and correct it.”

Can they finish third?

Following this defeat, Villa are going down to fifth as Liverpool were able to beat Crystal Palace 3-1 at the same time. They both have shared 58 points with 34 games, whereas Manchester United is also collecting the same points but still playing 33 games.

Prior to the match, Emery was ready to challenge The Red Devils not only to seal the Champions League spot but also to finish third. However, after this loss, the Spanish boss might have to reconsider focusing on winning one game at a time.

They are still on course for the Europa League trophy as they have a semi-final this midweek before returning to the Premier League on Monday. In their four remaining games, Villa would still have to play host to the relegation struggler Roberto de Zerbi’s Spurs and Liverpool, plus visit Burnley and Manchester City on their home turf in the final match.

Considering their Champions League target, they only need one more victory to seal the berth. John McGinn and Co. should be able to snatch one win in one of those remaining games, most likely against Burnley or Spurs, while winning over The Reds or The Citizens might be a bit tricky. So, finishing third could be tough, although not impossible.

Most importantly, Emery should focus on clinching the Europa League title, which is only two steps away. This is the biggest opportunity for them to end the title drought as well as cementing himself as the master of the tournament, by winning his fifth trophy in his career.
