Wolves 0-1 Tottenham match report: Spurs secure Premier League lifeline after 118-day drought

It has taken 118 days for Tottenham to finally get back to winning ways in the Premier League after Joao Palhinha scored a late goal in a 0-1 win at Wolves. Let’s have a look at the match report.

Believe your eyes: this is not a drill. Tottenham have actually won a Premier League game in the calendar year of 2026, and it was perhaps fitting that the drought-breaking three points arrived against a bottom-of-the-table Wolves side who were already confirmed for relegation.

Roberto De Zerbi did not want to make any changes to his side from the unlucky 2-2 draw against Brighton last weekend, but he was forced into one, starting Djed Spence over the injured Destiny Udogie.

First half: Wolves 0-0 Tottenham

For a side sitting two points inside the relegation zone, Tottenham began brightly and forced early chances through Randal Kolo Muani and Xavi Simons, both of whom fired their efforts well wide of the post.

However, that early intensity and aggression took a significant dip around the twenty-minute mark as Spurs appeared to run out of creative ideas under the afternoon sun at Molineux.

Unfortunately, Dominic Solanke’s evening came to an end just five minutes before half-time after he went down with what looked like a hamstring injury, with Richarlison coming on in his place.

Wolves, meanwhile, were perhaps fortunate to keep eleven men on the pitch after Andre lunged into a challenge on Yves Bissouma; however, with the midfielder appearing to lose his footing beforehand, the incident looked worse than it truly was, and referee Anthony Taylor opted for just a yellow.

Second half: Wolves 0-1 Tottenham

Having grown frustrated with Kolo Muani’s loose use of possession in the first half, De Zerbi turned to Mathys Tel at the break.

Xavi Simons was handed a huge chance to replicate his wonder goal from last weekend, and he did everything right except the finish, firing over under pressure.

The injury curse struck again shortly after when Simons went down following a tough challenge on his knee, and the fact he had to be stretchered off suggests his season could unfortunately be over.

Spurs then had Antonin Kinsky to thank for keeping them level, as the keeper produced a massive one-on-one save to deny Adam Armstrong after Kevin Danso had completely misjudged a long ball.

Jose Sa made a similar world-class save at the other end to stop a thumping Rodrigo Bentancur header, but he could do nothing on the following corner when Joao Palhinha reacted quickest to poke home a Richarlison effort that was heading wide.

Spurs were spared the all-too-familiar heartbreak of a last-second equaliser, as Kinsky produced another brilliant save to deny a curling free-kick from just outside the box.

What’s next for Spurs?

Despite Spurs’ decent start, the majority of the game still looked like two of the worst Premier League sides playing each other, which, in fairness, is exactly what they are right now.

For a brief period during the match, Tottenham had edged themselves out of the relegation zone, only for West Ham to snatch a late winner elsewhere and restore the status quo at the bottom of the table.

The injuries will sting for Spurs, as they lose two more players this time, Dominic Solanke and Xavi Simons, with more details to follow, although Simons’ injury in particular looks very concerning.

However, this result has to be a huge confidence booster for a group of players who had forgotten how to win a league game. With only four matches left, there is finally a bit of hope.

Next up is a tough trip to Aston Villa.
