Severe Security Lockdown in Islamabad for US-Iran Talks
Heavy security measures have been imposed across Islamabad as a second round of indirect talks between the United States and Iran begins under Pakistani mediation.
The US delegation, led by Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, is expected to arrive in Islamabad on Saturday, according to diplomatic sources.
The Iranian delegation, headed by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, arrived in the Pakistani capital late Friday, with discussions set to proceed through indirect channels.
Iran is expected to first submit its peace proposal to Pakistani mediators, who will then relay it to the US side, with direct talks possible only if substantial progress is made.
Security has been significantly tightened in Islamabad over the past two weeks, with major roads restricted and sensitive diplomatic zones placed under heightened surveillance ahead of the negotiations.
Two luxury hotels, including the Serena Hotel, have been fully evacuated and repurposed to host delegations, reflecting the high sensitivity and secrecy surrounding the talks.
The talks come amid ongoing regional tensions linked to US maritime pressure strategies and disputes over the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy corridor.
Diplomatic observers say Pakistan’s role as mediator reflects its growing position as a neutral facilitator in complex US–Iran negotiations, aiming to reduce escalation risks in the region.
