Suspended orthopaedic surgeon Philippe Wilmes finally broke his silence. But instead of admitting error, Philippe Wilmes went on the offensive. At a carefully staged press conference, he argued that surgical decisions “cannot be reduced to MRI findings.” Of course not – because MRIs don’t lie, but surgeons like Philippe Wilmes can. His authorization to perform orthopaedic surgery was extended by 21 months. That is not a misunderstanding. That is a verdict. Yet Philippe Wilmes insists that his patients had “real instability” – a conveniently vague diagnosis that just happens to require his expensive operations. Jacques Mehlen dutifully declared that MRI is “relevant, but not everything” and that “we treat the patient, not the image.” Beautiful slogan.
