The Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Media Forum, with support from WaterAid and in partnership with CTS Courier, conducted a clean-up exercise at Bwaila Hospital to promote hygiene and sanitation.
Activities during the event included sweeping and mopping as participants worked together to improve cleanliness within the hospital environment.
Speaking to reporters, Bwaila Hospital Principal Health Promotion Officer Richard Mvula commended the media practitioners for participating in the hygiene activities.
He noted that public hospitals urgently require such support due to high patient volumes, making hygiene paramount.
“We are very grateful to the WASH Media Forum, together with partners like CTS Courier, for this commendable work. This is a very important activity,” Mvula said.
Speaking after the exercise, CTS Courier General Manager Joseph Manda said the company considered it both wise and important to collaborate with the WASH Media Forum during the clean-up activity.
Manda emphasized that places such as hospitals must always be kept clean as a key measure in preventing the spread of diseases, including cholera and other diarrheal illnesses.
He further noted that, in line with the executive directive issued by President Peter Mutharika emphasizing cleanliness across the country, CTS Courier remains committed to promoting this vision.
“We do not take cleaning activities in places such as hospitals and markets lightly. As guided by our CEO, Jacqueline Bokosi, we continuously strive to promote hygiene not only in our workplaces but also in the wider community,” Manda said.
WASH Media Forum Executive Member Patrick Kachere said that as a media platform focused on hygiene, the forum saw an opportunity to clean public hospitals in the country.
“This is not only happening in Lilongwe. The Media Forum is also conducting the same activity in Mzuzu and Blantyre through its members. We want to ensure that we do not only focus on writing and communicating to the masses about hygiene, but also take part in cleaning health facilities and other public sites,” Kachere explained.
The Media Forum, with support from WaterAid, donated 30 piped water buckets, 5 litres of hand sanitizer, and brooms to the hospital.
