An Offensive Explosion
Fueled by a half-dozen homeruns, the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Boston Red Sox (9-17) by a score of 10-3 Friday night at Camden Yards. The Birds struck early and scored runs in six of their eight innings at bat.
Gunnar Henderson led off the game with a solo homerun, his eighth of the season, and finished the night 3 for 5 with 3 runs scored and 1 RBI.
Two batters later, Adley Rutschman hit the first of his two homeruns on the night. Homering again in the fourth, Rutschman finished his night by going 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored and 6 RBI.
Completing a trifecta of homeruns, Dylan Beavers also went yard in the first inning.
The third inning saw Samuel Basallo hit his fourth homerun of the year. Basallo, who also doubled in the first inning, went 4 for 5 with a run scored and 1 RBI.
Baltimore’s sixth and final homerun came off the bat of Coby Mayo in the fifth. It marked the third consecutive game that he has left the yard.
Taylor Ward produced another four hit game on Friday and scored two runs as well with a walk.
All of this firepower came in support of starter Brandon Young (2-0) who was called up when Dean Kremer landed on the Injured List. In 5.2 innings of work, Young allowed 3 runs on 7 hits, including a Wilyer Abreu homerun in the second inning, while walking 1 and striking out 5.
Yennier Cano, Andrew Kittredge and Cameron Foster combined to hold the Red Sox scoreless over the final 3.1 innings.
Pete Alonso went 1 for 5 to round out Baltimore’s 20 hits in the game. That hit total was certainly a pleasant sight to see.
