Gunmen kill 10 in attack on mining project in Pakistan’s Balochistan
Gunmen attack a mining site in Pakistan’s Balochistan, killing 10 people including workers and police, highlighting rising insecurity in resource-rich province.
At least 10 people were killed after armed attackers stormed a copper and gold mining project in Balochistan, local officials said.
Around 40 militants, traveling on motorcycles and vehicles, launched the attack late Wednesday in the Darigwan area of Chaghi district.
Officials said the victims included seven workers and three police personnel, while unconfirmed reports suggested some employees may have been abducted.
Police confirmed the incident, adding that the bodies of the victims were transferred to nearby hospitals. The project operator, National Resources, said most of its workforce comes from local communities and pledged continued support for regional development.
No group has claimed responsibility, but separatist militants have intensified attacks in Balochistan, often targeting mining, infrastructure, and security forces.
The Baloch Liberation Army has carried out major coordinated assaults in recent months, including a wave of attacks earlier this year that killed over 190 people.
Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest yet poorest province, has long faced unrest, with insurgent groups accusing the government of exploiting natural resources without benefiting local populations.
Human rights groups condemned the attack, stressing that civilians must be protected and that deliberate targeting of non-combatants violates fundamental international norms.
