Russia sends first humanitarian grain shipment to Afghanistan via WFP
Russia delivers nearly 4,000 tons of wheat flour to Afghanistan, as aid agencies warn of worsening humanitarian conditions and urgent food needs.
Russia has delivered its first humanitarian shipment of flour and wheat to Afghanistan, marking a new contribution to emergency food assistance efforts.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said a ceremony was held in Mazar-i-Sharif to hand over the aid to the World Food Programme.
According to officials, the shipment totals 3,977 metric tons and forms part of Russia’s core contribution to WFP operations in the country.
Afghanistan is facing a severe humanitarian crisis, with millions struggling with food insecurity due to economic collapse, drought, and limited access to livelihoods.
The United Nations has repeatedly warned that without sustained international support, basic services and food supply systems could deteriorate further, especially in rural areas.
Separately, the European Union announced $175,000 in emergency funding to support communities affected by recent flooding in Afghanistan.
Aid agencies continue to stress the need for coordinated international assistance, as extreme weather and ongoing economic challenges deepen vulnerability across the country.
Humanitarian organizations say continued deliveries of food and essential supplies remain critical to preventing further deterioration in living conditions for millions of Afghans.
