Winter Storm Warning for Montana as 18 Inches of Snow, 50 mph Winds Loom: 'Whiteout Conditions'
The National Weather Service updated its winter storm warnings and only one state in the United States received the strong warnings this time around.
As a strong winter front pushes into the Northern Rockies, Montana is set to receive a heavy amount of snowfall.
"Winter storm warnings remain in effect for portions of the northern Rockies through Friday for heavy snow, followed by improving conditions by the weekend as the main storm system departs the region," the National Weather Service announced.
Montana Bracing for Heavy Snow
The Great Falls office of the National Weather Service revealed the latest forecast.
"Snow continues across North Central MT through Saturday. Scattered rain/snow showers continue through the evening. Any wet pavements will quickly freeze and become slick tonight. Gusty winds Friday can cause snow squalls and reduced visibility from blowing snow," it said.

The Cooke City region is expected to receive the worst snowfall with up to 18 inches possible, while the region also welcomes 45 mph winds. Up to 50 mph winds are in the forecast for other regions in Montana, according to the data from the Great Falls office.
The National Weather Service also issued a travel warning for residents in Montana amid "whiteout conditions."
"Expect difficult driving conditions due to slush or snow covered roadways. Falling and or blowing snow may significantly reduce visibility at times. Those with outdoor plans should be prepared for dangerous outdoor conditions," it said.
Those who risk travel are warned to keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in their vehicle in case of an emergency.
What Is a Winter Storm Warning?
A winter storm warning is issued when a significant combination of hazardous winter weather is occurring or imminent.
Significant and hazardous winter weather is defined as a combination of:
- 5 inches or more of snow/sleet
AND/OR - Enough ice accumulation to cause damage to trees or power lines.
AND/OR - A life threatening or damaging combination of snow and/or ice accumulation with wind.
Winter storm warnings for Montana are expected to expire on Friday afternoon (Southern Montana) or Saturday morning (Northern Montana).
