Chiefs’ Coach, Dave Merritt, Arrested on “Domestic” Charge Ahead of 2026 NFL Draft
The week of April 20 has certainly been an active one in the NFL. While all eyes should be on the 2026 NFL Draft and which new players will “freshen up” rosters, it’s the current coaching staff around the league that’s grabbing headlines. What started out as perhaps a misinterpreted moment between New England Patriots’ head coach Mike Vrabel and sports journalist Dianna Russini has now snowballed into an alleged affair. Despite his success with the Patriots and at least getting them to the Super Bowl this year, his salacious story has temporarily taken over his narrative.
Now, there appears to be some troubling news coming out of Kansas City according to the Kansas City Star. The Chiefs’ defensive backs coach Dave Merritt was arrested Wednesday night on a domestic battery charge.
Chiefs’ Dave Merritt Arrested for an Alleged Family Incident
Referring to the Kansas City Star story, 54-year-old Merritt was arrested for “domestic battery” around 9 pm on Wedensday, April 22 in the Kansas City suburb of Overland Park. Additionally, the report suggests his daughter was the victim. According to the complaint filed with the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office, Merrit is alleged to have “unlawfully, knowingly, or recklessly caused bodily harm to a daughter” which classifies as a misdemeanor domestic violence offense.
Kansas City Chiefs’ Opt Not to Comment for Now
At the time of publication, Merritt was known to still be in the custody of law enforcement, but making a first appearance in Johnson County District Court. The Chiefs organization were made aware of the arrest but offered no comment for the time being. No one in Merritt’s camp has commented either. No doubt, the team at least is likely waiting on more information about the incident to come to light. Plus, the team is preoccupied with the NFL Draft, which again starts tonight, on April 23. As more information about this story unfold, we can pass along updated information.
