Are we entering shorts season? Temperatures to hit 20°C this weekend

Temperatures are set to soar this weekend, reaching 20C in some areas as spring begins with sunny weather in the coming days.

Mild temperatures and sunny conditions this week were a welcome break from the brisk wind much of the UK has been experiencing.

Tomorrow, plenty of sunshine is expected, the Met Office said, and most of the UK will see warm temperatures, with the exception of coastal areas.

Steven Keates, The Met’s Deputy Chief Forecaster, said: ‘High pressure will remain broadly in charge of the UK’s weather for the remainder of this week and into the weekend.

‘Most places will remain dry with a fair amount of sunshine, too. As is often the case, there are a few exceptions, with cloudier conditions for some at times and patchy rain possible for northern Scotland later in the weekend, so keep an eye on the forecast as the week progresses.’

Because of the sunshine, temperatures will steadily climb and peak into the low 20s on Friday, remaining that way throughout the weekend.

Some frost is still possible throughout the night, however, so keep your jackets close by.

The warm weather will be welcomed by Brits across the country, but it has put a damper on a unique competition in Northamptonshire.

This year’s ‘World Puddle Jumping Championships’ is under threat due to the upcoming UK mini heatwave, because there won’t be any puddles to jump in.

Organisers are concerned that no rain could stop play at the quirky annual event in Northamptonshire ahead of a mini heatwave this month.

The forecast has prompted theme park bosses to change the rules for the first time in 13 years, allowing competitors to jump into paddling pools instead.

Each year, hundreds of children from across the world enter the bizarre competition, which has previously received backing from Jacob Rees-Mogg in the House of Commons.

But with a lack of muddy puddles this year, organisers have had to think outside the box in order to allow the bizarre competition to continue.

Competitors are being urged to submit video entries this week, and the winner of the World Puddle Jumping Championships will be announced at the end of next week.

The event has attracted thousands of entries over the years, with previous winners including a nine-year-old girl from Kettering, Northamptonshire, and a three-year-old boy from Monmouthshire in Wales, with entries coming from as far away as Australia.
