Premier League Records: Golden Boot, Most Assists & Big Six Form
There is still plenty to play for in the final five games of the 2025/26 Premier League campaign.
The title race has taken a fresh twist with Manchester City leapfrogging Arsenal to go top of the table following a 1-0 victory over Burnley on Wednesday night.
Both sides are level on points and goal difference, but City’s superior head-to-head record means they get the nod in the ranking.
The top five race looks to have been decided, although a late capitulation from Aston Villa or Liverpool could make things interesting.
Meanwhile, the relegation battle is reaching an enthralling crescendo, with Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, and Nottingham Forest fighting to salvage their Premier League status.
While much of the attention will be on the league table in the final few weeks, the record books are also worth keeping an eye on. Without further ado, let’s get stuck in.
The Golden Boot race
Since joining City at the start of the 2022/23 campaign, only Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah has stopped Erling Braut Haaland from winning the Premier League Golden Boot.
This time around, the Norwegian marksman has an interesting challenger for the coveted prize, with Brentford striker Igor Thiago giving him a run for his money.
The Brazilian has been a breakthrough performer for the Bees this season, and his 21-goal tally is only bettered by Haaland’s 24.
With five games left, Thiago will fancy his chances of following in Salah’s footsteps, but the odds remain in Haaland’s favour, especially considering Brentford have tough fixtures coming up.
Brentford still have to face Manchester United, title challengers City, and Liverpool in their final five fixtures, with games against West Ham and Crystal Palace sandwiched in between.
Unfortunately for Thiago, he doesn’t have the best record against the Premier League’s “Big Six”.
He has scored just three times in nine such games, although he netted a brace in the 3-1 victory over United in the reverse fixture.
That record paves the way for Haaland to steamroll to a third Golden Boot award in four years, with City set to face Everton, Brentford, Bournemouth, Palace, and Villa.
Bruno Fernandes on course to shatter Premier League assist record
United talisman Bruno Fernandes has been spearheading the club’s quest to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since the 2022/23 campaign, when they finished third.
Michael Carrick should be applauded for orchestrating United’s resurgence after taking over from Ruben Amorim as interim manager.
Since joining the club, Carrick has won eight of his 12 Premier League games in charge.
United have also been in fantastic goalscoring form under the former midfielder, scoring two or more goals in seven of those 12 games.
Fernandes has helped United recapture their attacking spark.
The Portuguese midfielder played in a deeper role under Amorim and returned just seven assists halfway through the season.
However, moving further up the pitch under Carrick has been a game-changer. Fernandes has since notched a further 11 assists, taking his tally to 18 in the Premier League.
Arsenal and City legends Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne share the record for the most assists in a single Premier League campaign (20).
Fernandes is now on course to shatter that record, which has stood for over two decades.
How the “Big Six” teams have fared this season
There has been a hostile takeover in the traditional “Big Six”, with Aston Villa taking Tottenham Hotspur’s place among the Premier League elite.
Interestingly, the Villans have given a remarkable account of themselves.
Unai Emery’s side rank third in the Big Six table, behind City and United, who extended their lead at the summit with a 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
United have picked up 18 points from nine Big Six fixtures, averaging two points per game (PPG).
City closed the gap to one point with back-to-back victories against Chelsea and Arsenal, taking their tally to 17 points (1.88 PPG) and setting up a mouth-watering season finale.
The Cityzens could still leapfrog their next-door neighbours when they face Villa at the end of the season, with United scheduled to take on Liverpool on May 3.
While Arsenal remain in fourth, back-to-back defeats against United and City have sent Chelsea crashing to the bottom of the Big Six ranking with just eight points from 10 games (0.88 PPG).
They have one more point than Liverpool, but the Reds could bolster their tally when they face United, Chelsea, and Villa next month.
