A supporting role in the 1969 film Easy Rider, starring Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda, earned Jack Nicholson his first Oscar nomination and would be the catapult for his storied career over the next 40 years.
Jack Nicholson has 12 Oscar nominations to his name but his first came for Best Supporting Actor for Easy Rider back in 1970. In the 1970s, Nicholson would star in iconic films like Chinatown (1974), One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest(1975) and The Last Detail (1973). The 1980s would see the actor follow up the previous decade with even more iconic roles, like Jack Torrance in Stanley Kubrick’s horror masterpiece The Shining (1980) and as the Joker in Tim Burton’s Batman (1989). Nicholson would continue creating unforgettable performances in films like A Few Good Men (1992), The Departed (2006) and As Good as It Gets (1997) until taking his final bow from acting in 2010.
The pillar of the film industry would end his career with three Academy Award wins from 12 nominations, making Nicholson still tied for the most ever Oscar wins by a male actor. Jack took home the award for best lead actor for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and As Good as It Gets, as well as best supporting actor for Terms of Endearment (1983).

Today, one of the most decorated actors to ever live turns 89 years old. Nicholson was born on April 22, 1937, in Neptune City, New Jersey. He starred in his first movie, The Cry Baby Killer, in 1958.
The actor currently lives on his estate in Beverly Hills, California, which he has owned since 1969. Jack is rarely in the spotlight these days. His last public appearance was at the SNL 50th anniversary special in 2025, and before that at a Los Angeles Lakers game in 2023.
We may never see him again in a new movie or cheering courtside at a Lakers game, but Nicholson will always be one of the most iconic members of the movie industry and Los Angeles culture to ever live.
Happy birthday, Jack!
