Tottenham graduate Andros Townsend fights Thailand relegation after five managers in one season
Former Tottenham Hotspur star Andros Townsend, who once thrived on the flanks of White Hart Lane, now finds his professional career following a remarkably similar trajectory to the current plight of the North London club, as both battle against the threat of relegation.
Spurs Web recently reported that Tottenham has spent close to one billion pounds on transfer recruitment over the last five years.
But despite this enormous financial outlay, which firmly establishes the club among the top five highest spenders in the Premier League during that period, the investment has failed to deliver sustained success on the pitch for the Lilywhites.
The club currently finds itself in the precarious position of the Premier League bottom three, with Roberto De Zerbi fighting to ensure the side does not suffer the ignominy of a drop to the Championship.
It is a startling situation for a multi-million-pound squad that was widely expected to be competing at the opposite end of the table this season.
However, the club is not the only party struggling for safety, as one of its former academy graduates finds himself in an almost identical position in Southeast Asia.
Former Tottenham winger Andros Townsend faces relegation battle in Thailand
Since departing Tottenham in 2016, Andros Townsend has experienced a varied career across several clubs, beginning with a permanent move to Newcastle United, where his individual form could not prevent the club from suffering relegation.
He subsequently moved to Crystal Palace for a reported £13 million and became a staple of the side for five seasons, making 185 appearances and scoring 16 goals, including a memorable Puskas-nominated volley against Manchester City in 2018.
Following spells at Everton and Luton Town, the winger moved abroad for the first time in his career to join Turkish Süper Lig side Antalyaspor in September 2024.
In August 2025, Townsend transferred to Thai League 1 side Kanchanaburi Power, where he remains a key part of the first-team squad as of April 2026.
While his career has seen him travel across continents, the veteran midfielder is now facing a familiar struggle at the bottom of the domestic standings.
Townsend runs the serious risk of being relegated to the second division with Kanchanaburi Power as his side has struggled for consistency throughout the campaign.
The team has played 27 matches so far and has managed to pick up just four victories, a disappointing return that has seen five different managers occupy the dugout in a single season.
Spurs and Andros Townsend both eye late survival charge
Interestingly, much like Tottenham, the side currently employing Townsend still possesses a mathematical chance of securing their safety with only three matches remaining in the season.
The difference between Kanchanaburi Power and 13th-placed Sukhothai FC is just three points, although the latter possesses a goal difference that is currently two goals superior to that of the side featuring the former Spurs man.
Should Kanchanaburi Power manage to win all of their remaining fixtures, they could well secure their top-flight status, which is a scenario that draws clear parallels with the situation currently unfolding in North London.
Tottenham remain in the relegation zone, but their destiny remains within their grasp if they can find a way to navigate their final hurdles in the Premier League.
De Zerbi knows that his side can still ensure their survival if they can manage to secure nine points from their final five games of the campaign.
