Aston Villa is the frontrunner to sign Wales international and Premier League star
Aston Villa is the front-runner to sign the Wales international and Premier League star for free in the next transfer window.
Aston Villa transfer business is brewing again. They have been reportedly leading the race to lure the Wales international midfielder to Villa Park in the summer. The Fulham key man, Harry Wilson, has been one of the Villa transfer targets since last year. According to the report in Birmingham Mail,
“He has not signed a new deal with Fulham. He is considering his options but is believed to be keen on a move to Villa Park. “
Is he a fit for Aston Villa?
Harry Wilson is a versatile winger who could also be deployed in the number ten and the number six roles as well. This season, he has registered 11 goals and seven assists in 36 games in all competitions.
He perfectly fits the role in Villa, especially should they lose Morgan Rogers this summer. In fact, Wilson can be better alternative than snatching Curtis Jones since The Villas would still have to spend some fee for the Liverpool midfielder. Wilson’s successful pass rate reaches up to 80.7%, with 59 % accurate long balls and 51.9 % successful dribbles, according to the FotMob site.
His defensive contribution is fairly impressive too, with 14 interceptions, three blocking shots and 43 clearances this season. His aerial duel might not be the best feature, but the Liverpool academy product has overall made 161 contributions in the defensive phase.
With such experience and skills, the Lions are reportedly willing to double his current wage in Fulham. They even plan to strike the deal worth £100,000 per week for the midfielder who has been capped 69 times at the international stage.
Seeking a new challenge
The reason behind his intention to run down his current contract with the Cottagers without extension is more of his ambition to seek a new challenge.
The chance for playing in the European top-flight competition, like the Champions League, is surely too good to turn down. Despite no official decision from him yet, Wilson is more likely heading to the Unai Emery‘s side than Everton, which has been keen on his signature too.
Meanwhile, the opportunity to return to his former side, Liverpool, might be appealing but not promising, especially if he is looking for regular minutes. They snubbed him before by loaning him to five different teams before landing in Fulham.
Sadly, none of them were playing in the continental competition. The likes of Crewe Alexandra, Hull City, Cardiff City, and Derby County were still in the lower tier of English football. His stint with Bournemouth was the only time he featured in the topflight, yet without European fixtures.
