NHL Today: Boston Bounces Back

Morgan Geekie’s lucky goal helped Boston tie the series. (Eric Bolte-Imagn Images)

This week, the Kings were crowned by shattered glass; J.J. Moser’s overtime goal tied the series for Tampa Bay; and Roope Hintz (LBI) didn’t travel with the team for Games Three and Four in Minnesota. Other Fantasy hockey stories we’re all over include…

Morgan Geekie On a Heater

In 2024-25, the Boston Bruins’ streak of 17 straight winning seasons was snapped as the team missed the playoffs for the first time in almost a decade. Well, thanks to dramatic improvements on both ends of the ice – especially on offense – Boston was back to its winning ways this season, returning to the postseason.

And while the Bruins kind of blew it in Game One of its series against Buffalo, they rode a three-goal second period to a 4-2 win in Game Two on Tuesday to square the affair.

One of the biggest reasons Boston’s offense was so much better this season is the continued development of left winger Morgan Geekie. He may be prone to streaks (like many goal scorers), but it’s hard to argue with career highs across the board as he flirted with his first 40-goal season.

Geekie had a league-leading 20 goals through the first 27 games before managing just 10 over the next 27. He was strong in limited action in February but then came a horrific drought in March. But Geekie is red hot again (and pretty lucky, too), with seven tallies over the last six games, and you know things are going your way when this happens…

With two goals and two assists through the first two games, he’s just one point shy of matching his career playoff high already. Geekie has increased his Fantasy point total every season, topping 500 on Yahoo for the first time in 2025-26; after this season’s breakout, he’s now a top 70 skater for keeper leagues.

His instincts on offense have always been strong, and while he shook off his traditional defensive liabilities the previous two seasons, he struggled in that regard again this season, and that will ultimately cap his value.

Ducks Return to the Postseason

Another team that bucked the odds to make the playoffs this season is the Anaheim Ducks. Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised given that since bottoming out in 2022-23, Anaheim has been steadily on the rise.

The Ducks increased their point total by one to 59 in 2023-24, but then took a quantum leap to 80 last season thanks to a strong finish. This season Anaheim enjoyed its best effort since 2017-18 (the last time it was in the playoffs), but 92 points isn’t generally good enough to make the postseason. In this season, in a weaker Western Conference, it was.

And on Wednesday, the Ducks will look to rebound after blowing a lead against Edmonton in Game One of their series. That was one crazy game, as the Oilers let a 2-0 lead disappear before recovering from a 3-2 deficit and winning it with a goal in the last two minutes of the third period.

Among the many Ducks who are experiencing playoff hockey for the first time is top line right winger Troy Terry. He played his first two NHL games in the last season Anaheim made the postseason, but he didn’t see any playoff action. Since then, he’s established himself as a force in its lineup, falling just short of a fifth straight 20-goal effort this season – despite missing 21 games – while setting a new career high in points per game.

Terry wasn’t very productive down the stretch, but made up for that in his playoff debut with two goals and an assist as he had a hand in every Duck tally. Already tied for third in playoff goals, what can he do for an encore as Anaheim seeks to avoid a 2-0 hole in this series?

In a Dynasty format, Terry is a top 225 player and remains a key player in a Duck attack that this season showed great balance with six players accumulating at least 50 points, but none recording as many as 70.

Waiver Wire Pick of the Week

Arttu Hyry, C, Dallas Stars (ESPN: 0.1 per cent; CBS: unowned): A deep league option, Hyry is guaranteed top nine minutes as long as Hintz remains out. Hyry slotted into the lineup in Game Two to help shore up the PK, and while he failed to generate much, he saw 13:15 of action and he did manage a goal in the regular season finale. Another member of the Dallas Finnish Mafia, he got into more games this season and was more productive (increasing his Fantasy points almost five fold), buoying hopes that he can be a full-timer in 2026-27.

RotoRob Tune of the Day

German industrial group Einsturzende Neubauten formed in West Berlin in 1980 and is still at it today. In 1996, the band released its seventh album, Ende Neu, featuring the track “Die Explosion im Festspielhaus” which translates to “The Explosion in the Festival Hall.”
