'Like a Prayer': Madonna Single and Album Hit No. 1 37 Years Ago
Life truly is a mystery. The "Queen of Pop" burst onto the music scene in 1979, and in the decades since, she's made an indelible impact on pop culture and society as a whole. Time magazine even included Madonna on their list of "The 25 Most Powerful Women of the Past Century." She paved the way for mega-popular women artists like Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga, who have all cited her as a major influence.
Madonna's "Like a Prayer" Single and Album Took the World by Storm
1989 (the year, not the Taylor Swift album) saw a significant turning point in Madonna's music career. She pivoted to catering to a more adult audience with her fourth studio album, Like a Prayer. It became her most personal work yet, delving into details of her tumultuous marriage to Sean Penn, her mother's death, her strained relationship with her father, and her Catholic roots.
The album hit music stores on March 20, 1989, while its first single, "Like a Prayer," was released 17 days prior. However, on this day 37 years ago, the titular track and its record peaked at No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and US Billboard 200 charts, respectively. The album also snagged the top spot on 20 other global weekly charts.
As for "Like a Prayer," it topped a whopping 27 charts and hit Platinum in six countries and Gold in four. It became Madonna's seventh No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, with Rolling Stone listing the tune on their "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" list. Meanwhile, Like a Prayer was also included on several best-of lists, such as Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" and Apple Music's "100 Best Albums."
In 2024, Marvel's Deadpool & Wolverine incorporated a choral cover of the hit song as a needle drop. This spawned a viral TikTok trend in which users played the track to convey their wildest personal stories with Pepé the King Prawn as the background.
Scorching Social Commentary
Perhaps what Madonna's culture-defining single is best known for is its controversial music video. Well, controversial for the time, but Madonna's choice to address these themes in a mainstream music video was quite ahead of its time.
Filmed in January 1989 and directed by Mary Lambert, the video tackled racism and showcased burning religious iconography. The main narrative focused on a Black man being wrongfully accused of murdering a white woman, who was killed by a group of white men.
The video's release garnered worldwide backlash from religious groups, including the Vatican itself. Most TV stations banned Madonna's "Like a Prayer" music video, but MTV continued to air it. Concurrently, Madonna's Pepsi commercial, which was supposed to celebrate the music video's debut, stirred controversy in the aftermath of said debut, resulting in Pepsi dropping her.
However, 37 years later, it's plain to see that Madonna broke barriers with her work, which still resonates today. She refused to compromise her artistic integrity in more ways than one.
