Malawi Braces for Possible Condom Shortage
Malawi could soon face a shortage of condoms as global supply chain disruptions continue to affect production and distribution worldwide.
Karex, the world’s largest condom producer, has warned that prices may rise by between 20 and 30 percent.
The company’s CEO, Goh Miah Kiat, says the increase is driven by rising costs of raw materials, manufacturing, and shipping.
The disruptions are linked to ongoing tensions affecting key shipping routes, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical channel for global trade.
Delays in transporting essential materials have slowed production and deliveries, even as demand remains high.
Karex produces more than five billion condoms annually and supplies over 130 countries, including Malawi.
If the projected increase takes effect, prices in Malawi could rise from around MWK 900 per packet to approximately MWK 1,170, reflecting a 30 percent jump.
While the company says it currently has enough stock to last a few months, prolonged disruptions could lead to reduced availability and higher prices in the near future.
In Malawi, where access to affordable contraceptives remains crucial for public health, any shortage could have significant implications.
However, health officials in the country are yet to comment on the potential impact of the global supply challenges.
