MCP gives Prophet Liabunya a middle finger…tells him “to hell with your prophecy”
The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has strongly rejected claims made by self-proclaimed prophet Austin Liyabunya that he received a divine message instructing changes in the party’s leadership ahead of the 2030 general elections.
Liyabunya alleged that President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera should step down as MCP leader and be replaced by Vitumbiko Mumba if the party is to improve its chances of returning to government in 2030.
He further claimed that this directive was received through spiritual revelation.
However, MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila dismissed the assertions, stating that the party does not recognise or respond to claims of divine instruction in matters of political leadership.
She emphasised that MCP is guided strictly by its constitution, internal structures, and the decisions of its membership, rather than external religious pronouncements.
Kabwira noted that the party remains firmly behind Dr. Chakwera’s leadership and that any discussions regarding succession or leadership changes would only take place through formal party processes, including a national conference in line with MCP rules.
She further stressed that MCP is a political organisation, not a religious institution, and therefore does not base its decision-making on prophetic or spiritual claims made outside its established governance framework.
The remarks from Liyabunya were circulated on social media, where he maintained that his message was spiritually inspired and urged the party to consider leadership restructuring ahead of the 2030 elections.
The MCP has since urged the public to disregard the claims, reiterating that the party will continue focusing on its official political agenda and internal democratic procedures.
