Umodzi Party Proposes Return of G2G Fuel Procurement
Umodzi Party has called on government to consider bringing back the Government-to-Government (G2G) fuel procurement arrangement, saying it could help ease the ongoing fuel supply challenges in the country.
In a statement signed by its president, Hon. Thomas Wezzie Kaumba, the party says the current fuel scarcity is largely being driven by shortages of foreign exchange, which have affected fuel imports and supply stability.
The party says the situation continues to disrupt economic activity and has raised concern among various sectors of society. It argues that despite recent fuel price adjustments, availability has remained unstable.
UP is therefore proposing a return to the G2G procurement system, saying the arrangement previously helped improve fuel availability and ensure more consistent supply.
The party has also called for government to engage political leaders and other stakeholders in discussions aimed at finding long-term solutions to the fuel and wider economic challenges.
Meanwhile, government has acknowledged the fuel shortages, attributing them to limited foreign exchange resources needed for fuel imports.
Authorities say efforts are underway to secure the required forex to stabilise supply.
The energy regulator, MERA, has also confirmed that current fuel supply is below national demand, contributing to the ongoing shortages, but says measures are being implemented to normalise the situation.
Government has maintained that interventions are in place to address the fuel supply challenges affecting the country.
