Trump says US has closed Hormuz, Iran wants it reopened
Trump says the US has closed the Strait of Hormuz, while extending the ceasefire and maintaining pressure on Iran for negotiations.
Donald Trump said the United States has “fully closed” the Strait of Hormuz, adding that Iran is seeking to reopen the strategic waterway despite public statements to the contrary.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump claimed Iranian officials only say they support closure of the strait “to save face,” arguing that Tehran depends heavily on the route for oil revenues.
“Iran does not want the Strait closed; they want it open so they can make $500 million a day,” he wrote, adding that closure would significantly hurt Iran’s economy.
Trump also said he had been told in recent days that Iran was eager to reopen the strait, but warned that doing so without a deal would weaken US leverage in negotiations. He added that any agreement would otherwise require overwhelming pressure, including potential military escalation.
The remarks come after Trump extended a temporary ceasefire with Iran, allowing more time for negotiations while keeping military and economic pressure in place.
Despite the extension, the US has maintained a naval blockade and signalled readiness to resume hostilities if talks fail, reflecting a strategy of combining diplomacy with coercive leverage.
Iran has not officially commented on the latest ceasefire extension or Trump’s recent statements, maintaining a cautious public stance amid internal debates over how to proceed with negotiations.
Previous statements from Iranian officials have stressed that Tehran will not negotiate under pressure, even as indirect signals suggest openness to continued diplomatic engagement.
The situation highlights ongoing tensions between the two sides, with both maintaining firm public positions while leaving room for potential talks.
