Two Chelsea stars brutally singled out for ‘awful’ performance against Brighton during 3-0 defeat

Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo have been brutally slammed following an “awful” performance in the middle of the park during Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat to Brighton on Tuesday night.

The Blues’ midfield duo, who arrived at Stamford Bridge for a combined fee exceeding £220 million, were unable to exert any control as the Seagulls dominated the encounter at the American Express Stadium.

The defeat marks a historic low for the London club, who have now failed to score in five consecutive Premier League matches, their worst barren run since 1912.

Chelsea duo Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo slammed

Veteran commentator John Southall did not hold back in his assessment of the two midfielders during the live broadcast.

As Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, who has been linked with Man United, dictated the tempo of the game, Southall pointed out the stark contrast between the expensive visitors and their hosts.

Southall said (via BBC Sports Live):

“When you think of Fernandez and Caicedo in the middle of the pitch, two players of that calibre, and the money that’s been spent on both of them… they’re being overshadowed tonight.

“Fernandez has had an awful night, and if you look at his opposite number, Baleba has been the far better player of the two.”

Caicedo’s return to his former club was particularly miserable; the Ecuadorian was at fault for Brighton’s second goal, scored by Jack Hinshelwood, after losing possession in a dangerous area.

The home crowd revelled in the struggles of their former stars, with Robert Sánchez and Marc Cucurella also receiving a hostile reception.

The 3-0 humbling leaves Liam Rosenior’s side sitting in seventh place, now seven points adrift of the Champions League spots with just four games remaining.
