Manchester United make crucial stance on next manager, decision could divide fans
Manchester United are reluctant to consider any manager who will be participating in this summer’s World Cup for their permanent managerial role, according to the Daily Mail.
This effectively rules out Thomas Tuchel, Julian Nagelsmann, Carlo Ancelotti and Mauricio Pochettino for the position.
It is understood that Michael Carrick is now increasingly likely to become the next manager after leading United to the brink of Champions League qualification.
United are 10 points clear of sixth-placed Chelsea with five games remaining. They currently need six points to guarantee qualification.
United’s hierarchy have been impressed with Carrick and his staff since their appointment in January.
They are unlikely to turn to alternatives such as Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola, Marco Silva or Eddie Howe, underlining their confidence in Carrick.
However, a final decision is yet to be made, with the club focusing on securing Champions League qualification.
The Mancunian giants face Brentford, Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, while travelling to Sunderland and Brighton & Hove Albion in their remaining fixtures.
United are now expected to announce their new manager early this summer, with those busy at the World Cup unlikely to land the position.
This would in turn help United’s recruitment, as prospective signings often prefer clarity over who they will be working under before deciding on their next move.
The new manager could also be around at the start of pre-season, helping United’s preparation for the new season.
He could oversee the Red Devils’ first pre-season game against Wrexham on July 18, one day before the World Cup final.
