Israeli Military Jails Two Soldiers Over Jesus Statue Desecration — Damaged Statue Quickly Replaced

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has already sentenced two soldiers to 30 days in military prison for the disgraceful destruction of a statue of Jesus Christ in a Christian village in southern Lebanon.

As The Gateway Pundit reported just days ago, shocking footage emerged showing an IDF soldier wildly swinging a sledgehammer at the head of a sacred crucifixion statue while another soldier gleefully filmed the vandalism.

The incident occurred in the Christian village of Debel during operations to root out Hezbollah’s terrorist infrastructure.

In a post on the X platform, the IDF said that they were investigating the incident and would take “appropriate measures” against those involved.

“Following the completion of an initial examination regarding a photograph published earlier today of an IDF soldier harming a Christian symbol, it was determined that the photograph depicts an IDF soldier operating in southern Lebanon.

The IDF views the incident with great severity and emphasizes that the soldier’s conduct is wholly inconsistent with the values expected of its troops.

The incident is being investigated by the Northern Command and is currently being addressed through the chain of command. Appropriate measures will be taken against those involved in accordance with the findings.

Furthermore, the IDF is working to assist the community in restoring the statue to its place.

The IDF is operating to dismantle the terrorist infrastructure established by Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, and has no intention of harming civilian infrastructure, including religious buildings or religious symbols.”

Just 72 hours after the photo went viral, the IDF handed down punishment.

The soldier who smashed the statue and the one who took the photo have both been yanked from combat duty and slapped with 30-day jail sentences.

The military’s top brass called the whole fiasco a “moral failure” that “contradicts IDF values and the expected conduct of its troops.” Six other soldiers who stood by and did nothing are now facing disciplinary action.

“The inquiry found that during IDF activity in the area of the Christian village of Debel in southern Lebanon, an IDF soldier damaged a Christian religious symbol while another soldier photographed the act. Six additional soldiers were present at the scene and did not act to stop the incident or report it.

The inquiry determined that the soldiers’ conduct completely deviated from IDF orders and values.

The IDF expresses deep regret over the incident and emphasizes that its operations in Lebanon are directed solely against the Hezbollah terrorist organization and other terrorist groups, and not against Lebanese civilians.

From the moment the report of the incident was received, the IDF has been working to assist the local community in replacing the statue.

Accordingly, it was decided that the soldier who damaged the Christian symbol and the soldier who photographed the act will be removed from combat duty and will receive 30 days of military detention. The remaining troops who stood by have been summoned for clarification discussions that will be held later on, after which further command-level measures will be determined.

Procedures regarding conduct with religious institutions and symbols were reinforced to the troops prior to their entry into the relevant areas, and will be reinforced again for all troops in the area following the incident.

The findings of the inquiry were presented to the Chief of the General Staff and the Commander of the Northern Command.

The Chief of the General Staff condemned the incident and stated that it constitutes unacceptable conduct and a moral failure, far exceeding any acceptable standard and contradicting IDF values and the expected conduct of its troops.”

The IDF has already worked with the local Christian community to replace the statue in full coordination.

“A short while ago, in full coordination with the local community of Debel in southern Lebanon, the damaged statue was replaced by IDF troops. The Northern Command worked to coordinate the replacement of the statue from the moment it received the report of the incident.

The IDF expresses deep regret over the incident, and is working to ensure that it does not happen again in the future.”
