The Devil Has Good Taste...
Of the 5,000 A-listers slated to appear in The Devil Wears Prada 2, the filmmakers somehow managed to edit out one of the buzziest actresses in the business due to a “creative decision.” Hmmm. Is it possible…the devil has good taste?
On Monday night, the cast gathered in New York for the premiere of the long-awaited sequel, where we finally saw Runway’s chicest employees reunited after 20 Miranda Priestly-less years. Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, and Emily Blunt helmed the couture extravaganza sure to rival May’s Met Gala. Other notable attendees include Stanley Tucci, Heidi Klum, Marc Jacobs, and Simone Ashley, who plays the Gen-Z version of Hathaway’s character.
Not on the red carpet was Sydney Sweeney, who, of course, was not in the original but was rumored to have a small cameo as herself in the sequel. But her three-minute scene was cut, according to Entertainment Weekly. Apparently, Emily Blunt’s character was dressing Sweeney as a celebrity client—but the aforementioned “creative decision” by the filmmakers scrapped it.
The outlet writes that the scene “did not work structurally with the rest of the sequence, and that the team working on the movie was grateful for her participation, making the decision to remove the bit a difficult one.” OK, but “not working structurally” sounds an awful lot like a Miranda Priestly read to me.
Aside from the returning cast of Hathaway, Streep, Blunt, and Tucci, the sequel will also feature newcomers Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, B. J. Novak, Kenneth Branagh, Rachel Bloom, and—drum roll, please—Lady Gaga. So there was a lot to pack in. But still, they couldn’t make room for Sydney? Actors get cut from films all the time, but cutting one of the most bankable box-office actresses seems very unlike those studio heads. I wonder…Did something happen?
Let’s go back in time, shall we? Last year, during filming of The Devil Wears Prada 2 from late June into July, while we were all minding our business and enjoying those leaked videos of Hathaway trotting behind Streep on set, a certain jeans ad was forced into our collective consciousness. After choosing not to comment on the white supremacist interpretation of it all, Sweeney finally decided to say something: “I don’t support the views some people chose to connect to the campaign,” she told People in December. Took a while, but fair enough.
Unfortunately (or not), that wasn’t Sweeney’s only PR disaster in 2025. Her previously sparkling It-girl image has never really recovered from being a registered Republican in Florida, attending the Bezos wedding, pissing off Zendaya, and, arguably, worst of all, dating Scooter Braun. So I guess we’ll never know why Sweeney was cut from the movie. (Even though we kind of do know…).
You can still see her in Euphoria Season 3 (which I am mentally and physically incapable of watching), and who knows, maybe next year in The Devil Wears Good Jeans.
