Bindi Irwin’s Daughter Grace Proves a Connection with Wildlife Is Genetic When Cuddling a Baby Wallaby
Steve Irwin isn’t here anymore, but his love of wildlife carries on through the next generation. Namely: his 5-year-old granddaughter, Grace Warrior. Bindi Irwin and Chandler Powell introduced their daughter to a baby wallaby at Australia Zoo, and the sweet moment proves a connection with wildlife is genetic.
The wildlife conservationist shared a video of her daughter at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital on April 19, where she taught her about a young wallaby named Rusty. “Rusty lost his mama,” Bindi tells her daughter, while holding the animal in a blanket. Grace is immediately distracted by how adorable the animal is, cutting in by saying, “So cute!”
Bindi then explains that because Rusty’s mother was lost, he needs “lots of love and care” by zoo staff instead. Bindi and Powell lift the baby wallaby into Grace’s arms, and her face immediately transforms into one of delight and happiness as she hugs the bundle, wrapped in a baby blanket. “Hi Rusty,” she says in the most adorable little Aussie accent.
Later, Bindi tells Grace, “So Rusty is going to be taken care of at the wildlife hospital.” Grace responds, “Do you know what? I could take care of him, too.” Is that not the sweetest show of support you’ve ever heard?! Grace is ready to step up and help the veterinarians and nurses in caring for this precious joey already!
In the caption, Bindi explains that her parents, Steve and Terri Irwin, started the non-profit organization, Wildlife Warriors, which helps support the Australia Zoo’s hospital. Since 2002, they have had over 159,000 animals pass through their doors and get the help they need to hopefully return them to the wild. “It’s so special watching Grace with the animals in care,” Bindi continued. “Her empathy for all living beings is beautiful.”
Someone commented on the heart-warming moment, “I’m just imagining how Steve would just be beaming [seeing] his daughter and granddaughter like this… heart is overflowing ❤️” Another wrote, “Teaching the next generation of warriors. I love this. ❤️ Your dad is so proud of you.”
“My heart melted by love,” another said.
In a May 2024 interview with SheKnows, Bindi gushed about her daughter. “Her thing is just animals,” Bindi revealed. “She likes to become an expert on animals.”
“So her new thing is facts. So, she’ll say something like, ‘Koalas eat eucalyptus. That’s a fact,’” Bindi continued, impersonating her daughter with a finger point and everything. “And it’s so cute, ‘cause it’s like, you know what? You can’t teach that. That is just who she is.”
