Faith Hill's 1998 Platinum Album 'Faith' Debuted 28 Years Ago
Few country stars were quite as big as Faith Hill in the '90s. In addition to being one of the most successful country artists of all time – with almost 50 million albums sold worldwide under her belt – Hill is also one of the first stars of that era to embrace country-pop (Shania Twain led that charge).
On this day in 1998, Hill released her self-titled third studio album, Faith, which produced an international hit for the vocalist. Incorporating both country and pop flourishes, the album was a significant commercial success. It went sextuple Platinum in the United States with 6 million albums sold, while going quadruple Platinum in Canada and Gold in Australia.
Charts-wise, the album peaked at No. 1 on the Canada Country Albums chart, while clocking in at No. 4 on the UK Country Albums chart, No. 7 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and No. 2 on the US Top Country Albums chart. The year-end charts saw Faith rank highly, including No. 3 on the aforementioned Canada Country Albums chart and No. 9 on the US Top Country Albums chart.
Hill released her first single from Faith, "This Kiss," on Feb. 23, 1998. The track was a massive hit for the star, reaching the top spot on the US Top Country Singles Sales and US Hot Country Songs charts. It also crossed over internationally, hitting No. 1 on the Canada Country Tracks chart.
"This Kiss" and Let Me Let Go" were both nominated for Grammys in the "Best Female Country Vocal Performance" category at the 41st and 42nd ceremonies, respectively. As a record, Faith was also nominated for "Best Country Album" at the Grammy Awards.
While it might not be Hill's best work, Faith is catchy as all get-out, and it certainly cemented the country-pop artist as a global phenomenon.
