After it previously was an arcade game under the title Vs. Duck Hunt, one of the most influential games in history was first released 42 years ago. Duck Huntfirst went on sale for Nintendo's Famicom console in Japan on April 21, 1984. It would take more than a year for it to become a launch title for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in North America, where it was often packaged with Super Mario Bros.
Upon its release, the game went on to become incredibly successful. According to GameRant, it is the second-best-selling NES game of all time, having sold 28.31 million units.
In addition to its commercial success, the game would have a massive pop culture impact as an entire generation of kids have never forgotten being laughed at by the Duck Hunt dog. It is so iconic that it has even been emblazoned on T-shirts since it is an artifact of so many people's childhood. That is a twist since many people have hated the dog in the past, with it being even very common to accidentally waste bullets firing Nintendo's Zapper gun at it.

Duck Hunt's legacy has continued to be cemented through the credit it has recently received. For example, Duck Hunt was included in lists of the best NES games of all time by Rolling Stone and Nintendo Life in 2025.
How This Game Defined an Entire Genre
During the 1970s, first-person shooter video games were released, including Maze War and Spasim. However, they weren't successful enough to popularize that type of game. As a result, many people consider Duck Hunt to be the original first-person shooter. While that isn't true, it was the first to become a smash hit and it introduced millions of people to the genre. That is why it came to define what a first-person shooter was at the time.
