Why We Love This Deal
When Men's Journal reviewed the best headlamps last year, we found that the Petzl Swift RL was the absolute best choice for campers and hikers. The only real downside is that it’s $135. If you’re camping on a budget this year but still want something excellent for hands-free vision, check out Petzl's Tikka Headlamp instead, while it's on sale for $17.
The Tikka is up to 51% off at REI right now in green, and you can also get it in blue or yellow for a few dollars more. It's worth noting that the blue and yellow are listed on a separate page.

This is a flooding headlamp with a simple single-button control, perfect for mindless operation. The trick to the system is that it has three operation modes, with the highest being a 350-lumen beam that can shoot out to 70 meters (nearly 230 feet). On lower settings, the headlamps' battery supply (either 3 x AAA batteries or the Petzl Core rechargeable battery) can last as long as 100 hours. Also note that there is a lock on the battery to help ensure a random turn-on in your pack doesn’t leave you with a nasty surprise later.
There’s also a red LED bulb and a strobe light mode to help signal your location. This, combined with the fact that the lamp has an IPX4 (resistant to rain) rating, means that it’s great for deep woods camping but also something you might appreciate having in your car trunk for untimely breakdowns. There are a lot of safety factors and versatility to appreciate in this humble device.

What Shoppers Are Saying
One user who used the headlamp for after-dark runs commented on just how comfortable the strap was on this lamp. “This strap is super easy to adjust, and its elasticity is perfect where it is supportive, but not super tight.”
There’s more reason than battery saving to use the low-light settings on the Petzl Tikka. Another who used it on those pre-bed dog walks commented, “I keep it on low so as not to destroy my night vision.” In other words, the lowest setting isn’t so bright that your pupils will shrink down to reduce incoming light, preserving your body’s natural night vision capabilities.
The Petzl Tikka Headlamp is just $17 right now and an excellent pick for campers trying to be wise with their adventure budget this year.
