Baseball5 takes centre stage at iconic location in Ebeltoft, Denmark
Syddjurs Baseball Club hosted the maiden edition of the Baseball5 Open in Ebeltoft, an old port town on the central east coast of Denmark. Ebeltoft, which has a population of 7,287, is located in Syddjurs municipality in Region Midtjylland on the larger Djursland peninsula of Jutland and is home to the iconic Glasmuseet, a world-renowned Glass Art Museum. The three-time Danish champions, Aarhus Havoc, won the tournament.
The museum and the historic Fregatten Jylland offered a picturesque backdrop to the Ebeltoft Open.
Jylland is a frigate which took part in the Battle of Heligoland, fought on May 9, 1864, between a Danish squadron led by Commodore Edouard Suenson and a joint Austro-Prussian squadron commanded by the Austrian Commodore Wilhelm von Tegetthoff, during the Second War for the control of the Schleswig-Holstein Region.
"I think this location demonstrates the true meaning of the WBSC's Play Everywhere philosophy," commented Suddjurs' President Philip Spielmann.
He added: "The tournament showcased how Baseball5 continues to transcend traditional boundaries, bringing high-energy urban sport to the heart of the Danish community."
The Ebeltoft Open attracted a vibrant mix of participants, ranging from seasoned elite players, like the winners Aarhus Havoc, to newcomers to the sport, proving that Baseball5 is the most inclusive sport in the region.
The competitive field included: the World Champions, a dedicated team of Venezuelan expatriates, paying tribute to their nation’s
recent World Baseball Classic success. Syddjurs Mavericks, the local Ebeltoft side and current Danish runner-up, and Galaxy Champions, a grassroots team formed on-site by local enthusiasts.
"While many traditional sports are confined to specific, municipally maintained facilities, Syddjurs Baseball Club is pioneering a different approach," added Philip Spielman. "The Mavericks train regularly in local schoolyards, utilising urban spaces to promote active lifestyles."
By setting up a professional-grade Baseball5 court in the middle of a high-traffic cultural landmark, the club successfully
bridged the gap between elite competition and public engagement.
"Our goal is to show that Baseball5 is not just an alternative; it is a catalyst for community building," continued Spielmann. "Seeing people stop,
watch, and eventually ask to join in—that is the essence of why we do this. It is truly a sport for everyone."
Looking ahead
The Ebeltoft Open also served as an official qualifying tournament for the 2027 Danish National Championship, awarding vital ranking points to the participants.
Syddjurs Baseball Club focuses on developing Baseball5 in Denmark. The club focuses on accessibility, community, and promoting a mixed-gender, street-based sporting culture that welcomes players of all ages and backgrounds.
"As the sport continues to gain momentum in Denmark, Syddjurs Baseball Club remains committed to fostering an inclusive environment, with a particular focus on encouraging greater female participation to strengthen the sport's mixed-gender nature," added Spielman. "With the success of this event, the club is already planning for future iterations, aiming to expand the reach of Baseball5 and further cement Denmark's place on the global Baseball5 map."
