'The Big Lebowski' Ranked "Best Weed Movie Ever"
In January 1998, a shaggy neo-noir premiered at the Sundance Film Festival before going on to moderate box office and critical success. Nearly 30 years later, the movie has transcended cult classic status to become a way of life for many devoted fans.
'The Big Lebowski,' written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, was recently ranked the greatest stoner flick of all time by Consequence of Sound.
The film follows Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski, a Los Angeles stoner caught up in a kidnapping scheme after being confused for a millionaire with the same name. Inspired by the detective novels of Raymond Chandler, 'The Big Lebowski' takes many surreal and absurdist turns before arriving at a surprisgly poigniant end.
Speaking to IndieWire back in 1998, Ethan said, "there was something attractive about having the main character not be a private eye, but just some pothead intuitively figuring out the ins and outs of an elaborate intrigue."
Played by future Oscar-winner Jeff Bridges, The Dude has become a modern folk hero. Much about the character is iconic—from the bathrobe that inspired countless Halloween costumes, to his love of White Russians.
Yet, there's a deeper reason why The Dude has come to mean so much to so many. A zen figure at the heart of an increasingly zany plot, he serves as a model for how to survive in a chaotic modern world. So much so, the character has spawned an entire religion—Dudeism—and an annual festival, Lebowski Fest.
Bridges reflected on the legacy of his character with The Hollywood Reporter back in 2023 to commemorate the film's 25th anniversary.
“I’m so happy to be in that movie,” he said. “I pretty much dug it all, man. There’s an aspect of the Dude I aspired to — he’s authentic, isn’t he? He’s who he is, and that’s about it. He’s a lovely cat.”
Many might be surprised to know The Dude was actually inspired by a real person, indie marketing guru Jeff Dowd. He met the Coen Brothers on their first film, 'Blood Simple' and the rest is movie history.
An all-star cast of actors doing some of their best work sorrounds Bridges, including John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Sam Elliott, John Turturro and Tara Reid.
Even the Coens themselves could have never predicted the enduring legacy of 'The Big Lebowski.'
"It didn't do particularly outstanding business in the theatrical market, but it did in the home video market — and then it became some sort of cult thing," reflected Joel back in 2013. "How do you explain that? I have no idea. It's one of the more bizarre afterlives, too, of any of the things we've done."
One of the most quoted lines from the film sums it up best. "The Dude abides."
