Michael Jackson Biopic: Disastrous Rotten Tomatoes Scores Revealed
Michael, the cinematic portrayal of the life and legacy of one of the most influential artists the world has ever known, is set to debut across the United States on Friday, April 24.
"The film tells the story of Michael Jackson's life beyond the music, tracing his journey from the discovery of his extraordinary talent as the lead of the Jackson Five, to the visionary artist whose creative ambition fueled a relentless pursuit to become the biggest entertainer in the world," reads the synopsis of the film.
"Highlighting both his life off-stage and some of the most iconic performances from his early solo career, the film gives audiences a front-row seat to Michael Jackson as never before. This is where his story begins."
The story begins with his humble beginnings in Gary, IN, but the first Rotten Tomatoes scores show the film doesn't live up to the audience's expectations.
First Rotten Tomatoes Scores Revealed
So far 46 critics have offered a score on Rotten Tomatoes and Michael sits with a measly 24% on the ratings platform.
Most of the scores thus far give the film at most two out of five stars and a "C" letter grade.
Critics Panned the Film for Its Glorification of Michael Jackson
Among the major critiques of the film was its decision not to Jackson's darker side.
"Hugely impressive musical and dance performances from the two young men playing Michael Jackson cannot shake off the uncomfortable fact that there is an entire other side to the pop star’s story which is entirely conspicuous by its absence here," John Nugent of Empire wrote while giving the film two of five stars.
"The nostalgia of Michael is for more than Michael Jackson. But blindly believing only in that celebrity, in that fantasy, is repeating a sad history all over again," adds Jake Coyle of the Associated Press, who gave it 1.5 stars.
"Michael has already caused many to question what’s missing: Janet Jackson (who indeed doesn’t exist in this “universe”) and any reference to the singer’s legal troubles (though that bankrupted moral and narratively corwardly positioning by Fuqua certainly doesn’t help either)," added Robert Daniels of RogerEbert.com, who gave it a paltry one star out of four. "But the absence of those elements isn’t what breaks this insipid biopic. It’s the lack of any complex interest in Michael himself."
While critics panned what the film didn't dive into, Jaafar Jackson and Juliano Valdi as young Michael, received praise for their performances.
Michael hits theaters on April 24.
