Mubi's library includes a variety of international movies.
  • Mubi is a streaming service with a curated collection of international and independent films.
  • Every day, one new movie is added to Mubi's "Film of the Day" library.
  • A monthly subscription costs $11, and Amazon Prime members can get a discounted rate of $6/month.

Mubi is a streaming service that focuses on indie movies and art film classics from around the world, offering a selection of international releases you won't find on mainstream platforms like Netflix.

The service also places a big emphasis on curation with its unique "Film of the Day" library. A new movie is added to this hand-picked collection every day, making it easy for indecisive viewers to find something worth watching.

To help you decide whether or not Mubi is a good fit your streaming needs, we laid out the service's main features, costs, titles, and more.

What is Mubi?

Founded in 2007 by Turkish businessman Efe Çakarel, Mubi is a subscription streaming service that features a curated selection of movies from around the world. The service's catalog places an emphasis on international movies, indie titles, classics, and art films instead of the mainstream releases you're more likely to see on platforms like Netflix and HBO Max.

Mubi has a library of on-demand films to choose from that are organized by categories for different themes and decades. Though subscribers are free to browse and stream titles from these sections whenever they'd like, Mubi's primary focus is placed on its ever-changing "Film of the Day" lineup.

The "Film of the Day" section highlights 30 specially curated movies. The streaming service adds one new title each day. When one movie is added to the list, another is removed. Titles that leave the "Film of the Day" section are either shifted to Mubi's larger on-demand archive or removed from the service entirely.

The goal of the "Film of the Day" section is to help cut back on browsing time by adding and spotlighting specific titles that Mubi thinks its subscribers will enjoy.

In addition to its streaming service, Mubi internationally distributes films, occasionally produces films, and regularly publishes film criticism

How much is Mubi?

A subscription to Mubi costs $11 a month if you sign up on the Mubi website. Viewers can save money by getting an annual subscription to Mubi for $84, which ends up saving you $48 a year. College students can sign up for Mubi using their university email for $7 a month.

Amazon Prime members get a discounted monthly subscription price for Mubi if they sign up through Amazon Prime Video Channels. With an Amazon Prime membership, Mubi only costs $6 a month. Standard memberships to Amazon Prime cost $13 a month or $119 a year.

Is there a Mubi free trial?

New members get a free seven-day trial to Mubi. Free trials are available whether you subscribe directly through the Mubi website or via Amazon Prime Video Channels.

After the free trial, your paid subscription to Mubi begins and automatically renews until canceled.

Does Mubi have a free streaming plan?

Though Mubi's on-demand service requires a subscription, anyone can visit the Mubi website and access a special live stream that previews select Mubi titles for free. Movies are streamed in their entirety, but English subtitles are not always available for this option and you can't pause or rewind.

Where can I stream Mubi?

You can stream movies on Mubi with your web browser or through the dedicated app. The Mubi app is available on smartphones, tablets, most streaming devices, and smart TVs like Samsung, LG, and Sony. A list of compatible devices is available on the Mubi website.

If you choose to subscribe via Amazon Prime Video Channels, you receive access to stream Mubi on every device compatible with Prime Video.

What movies are on Mubi?

Mubi offers a curated "Film of the Day" catalog with 30 rotating titles, as well as a larger on-demand archive of movies from around the world. Titles span through the decades, with films from the silent era all the way to the present day.

To highlight a recent example, "Styx" was added to Mubi on October 2 as the daily movie selection. From Austrian director Wolfgang Fischer, "Styx" is about a woman sailing alone through the Atlantic and encountering a group of refugees trapped on a sinking ship. Well received by critics, the movie holds a "93% Certified Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

A few of the Mubi's "Film of the Day" selections from September and October include:

  • "Bisbee '17" (United States, 2018)
  • "The Congress" (Israel, 2013)
  • "Tremors" (Guatemala, 2019)
  • "Swimming Out Till the Sea Turns Blue" (China, 2020)
  • "The Guerilla Fighter" (India, 1973)
  • "Truth or Consequences" (United States, 2020)
  • "Gregory's Girl" (United Kingdom, 1980)
  • "The Wall" (Austria, 2012)

Meanwhile, a few notable movies currently available in Mubi's larger on-demand library include:

  • "Ran" (Japan, 1985)
  • "The Holy Mountain" (Mexico, 1973)
  • "Ida" (Poland, 2013)
  • "Night of the Living Dead" (United States, 1968)
  • "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" (Sweden, 2009)

Is Mubi worth it?

The movies on Mubi are carefully curated, but the streaming service is not for everyone. Viewers who want entertainment options from major Hollywood studios will find a better selection on a streaming service like HBO Max, Netflix, or Hulu.

Mubi is an ideal fit for independent film lovers and fans of classic cinema who want to see the best international movies and don't mind reading subtitles. It's also a good option for people who are eager to discover new movies outside the mainstream but don't know where to start.

The "Film of the Day" selection is perfect for this purpose and helps cut down on browsing time. This makes Mubi a great option for people who want a more narrow and carefully curated selection to choose from, rather than just a massive library to search through.
